ASICS are all set to release their new 33 Collection range of running shoes. The new collection, due out in November 2011, is part of ASICS performance range and is said to offer ‘protection, flexibility, comfort and support in a lightweight, less structured package.’
The 33 Collection will consist of three styles of running shoe, each with their own specific benefits:
ASICS GEL EXCEL33
The ASICS GEL-EXCEL33 is a responsive, lightweight, high mileage trainer which supports the foot and provides an efficient, natural run. The EXCEL33 features a unique Heel Clutching System which help keep the shoe’s weight to a minimum. The upper construction delivers an exceptional fit and reduced irritation, while webbing mesh provides breathability.
ASICS GEL HYPER33
The new ASICS GEL HYPER33 is a lightweight, high-mileage trainer that delivers a responsive ride. A no-sew webbing upper construction delivers an exceptional fit and reduced irritation, while having great breathability. This one-piece upper also features reflective 3M elements for visibility.
ASICS GEL VOLT33
The ASICS GEL VOLT33 combines several ASICS technologies to offer top-quality support, comfort, cushioning, and natural motion. The VOLT33 feature a single layer SoLyte midsole which provides excellent bounce-back properties, cushioning durability, and exceptional light weight. Finally, a highly breathable mesh with a heel quarter of webbing mesh features reflective 3M elements for visibility.
The Features Of The 33 Collection
The new ASICS 33 Collection range certainly look the part but just what are the benefits of the new features added to the running shoe? ASICS have designed the shoes around an ‘exciting new interpretation of the asics impact guidance system (I.G.S.), the research-based, natural foot movement philosophy pioneered by asics over ten years ago.’
ASICS say that ‘the new collection offers both hardcore and frequent runners a lightweight and flexible shoe which provides comfort and cushioning.’
Here are the main features of the new 33 Collection:
1. Propulsion Trusstic System
The Propulsion Trusstic System enhances natural foot function by mimicking the foot’s Plantar Fascia connective tissue. The one-piece Propulsion Trusstic encourages a smooth transition by creating tension as the foot enters the mid-stance and releasing this tension during the propulsion phase, propelling the runner and minimising fatigue.
2. Full Length Guidance line
ASICS’ Guidance Line technology is designed to ensure that the shoe’s technologies interact with the foot along its ideal line of progression. The Guidance Line responds to the components in the Impact Guidance System and encourages an efficient toe-off position throughout the entire run.
Aimed at creating a more adaptive platform, the midsole and outsole incorporate a visible Flex Groove design that follows the foot’s centre-of-pressure during its gait cycle. This vertical groove encourages the foot to maintain a constant ‘line of progression’ as it replicates the midline of pressure with each stride. Reaching the ideal toe-off position, the Guidance Line finishes on the medial side allowing the lateral platform pod to release and thus encourage re-supination of the heel. As a result, running efficiency is increased, which in turn delays the onset of muscle fatigue and decreases the risk of injury.
The unique full-length dual density midsole construction is bonded to create greater flexibility and a smoother ride. A 48 degree SpEVA top layer is placed underneath the foot for comfort. SpEVA is an excellent midsole material that improves the bounce back characteristics of the shoe, giving the wearer a more energised ride. The 53 degree SoLyte bottom layer transmits a responsive and stable ride through the midsole.
ASICS visible Rearfoot and Forefoot Cushioning Systems are positioned between the top layer and baselayer of the midsole. The silicone based GEL enables optimum shock absorption.
5. Forefoot Flex Grooves
Multiple deep forefoot flex grooves allow the tooling to decouple in order to mirror the foot’s natural movement.
6. ASICS High Abrasion Rubber (AHAR)
The sole is constructed from a lightweight, high abrasion rubber which provides excellent grip whilst remaining durable.
7. Heel Clutching System
A new technology and additional weight saving innovation in the shoe’s upper is the Heel Clutching System, in which an external extension of the existing Pebax cradle replaces the previous internal heel counter.
The Pebax mould extends upwards from the heel cradle, and ‘clutches’ the entire rearfoot to create a more lightweight, stable, comfortable and irritation-free environment. The removal of the internal heel counter also allows for two layers of memory foam to be inserted for a Heel Clutching System to provide a more customised fit for different foot types. The PHF itself comprises a stitch-less design to offer an enhanced heel-fitting environment.
8. Heel Gradient
ASICS 33 have a 10mm heel drop, offering the wearer the best biomechanical position, enhancing forward motion and reducing the load on the Achilles tendon, calf muscles, hamstring and back.
