Running over Christmas
January 7th, 2009 by Ransacker | CommentComments
First off, I must apologise for the amount of time it has taken me to post my next entry. Rather unfortunately, the festive season is one of the busiest times of year for my day job and I was working most days and access to a computer let alone the Internet was at an absolute premium. No excuse I know, but it’s all I have.
I did have some time off to contemplate how this time of year affects the more ‘elite’ athletes amongst us. And by elite, of course I consider myself as amateur, so to define it please consider anyone who thinks of running as a past-time as elite to me.
I spent a small portion of Christmas in transit travelling between my home and that of my loved ones and on my journeys, I came across a number of committed souls out in what is traditionally considered a time of rest, relaxation and overindulgence….well in my world anyway.
I’ve never really considered what dietary constraints having a commitment to running puts on people and at Christmas, it must be far worse for those of you who want to keep your weight down for races (which I learned recently don’t just happen in the warmer months).
Having seen these hardy people out and running with steaming breath exuding from them ever faster as they struggled up hills or alongside roads, I learned that I can no longer consider the act of getting out there and running with the hope of eventually competing in a marathon as something I occasionally think about doing. If I want to even think about finishing the 26 miles, I’m going to have to gain the type of commitment that will get me into the right condition to do it.
So, I’m going to try and pledge to myself that I will go out running at least twice a week from here on in. If I do that I can slowly but surely build up the distance covered and ultimately I think I will have what it takes to complete the marathon when it comes round………I draw the line at Christmas though.
