ASICS Background

In 1949, Mr. Kohachiro Onitsuka developed running shoes for marathon runners and basket ball players, who, at that time, were wearing boots. Based on the advice of athletes, he developed improved running shoes. These running shoes were a huge success and were the beginning of ASICS. From the beginning, Onitsuka had a strong, international company with an skill for realising the development, production and marketing of high quality sport article. That is why, in 1977, Onitsuka Tiger combined forces with Jelenk and GTO, two other producers of sport articles, to create ASICS. Thanks to this fusion, ASICS grew in leaps and bounds.

ASICS is in the world’s top three running shoes mnaufacturers. Since it’s beginning in 1949, ASICS has, with the help of experts, top athletes and coaches, developed improved sports articles that allow individual athletes to reach their optimal capacity whilst providing reliable protection against injuries. Opened in May 1990, in Kobe, Japan, ASICS research center for the science of sport demonstrates ASICS’ dedication in the development of improved running shoes. The institute consists of individual departments with separate, specific tasks, such as the analysis of the body’s movements, testing materials and the development of new running shoes.
