Boot Room Banter: Sheffield United man Greg Halford..

March 11th, 2009 by James Evans | Comment

Greg Halford earned his reputation playing as a goalscoring full-back for the Colchester United side which gained promotion to the Championship in the 2005/06 season, and rose to fame for his long-distance shooting prowess as he notched 24 goals for the U’s during his four year stay.

Since leaving Colchester though, he has failed to make a lasting impression at Reading and Sunderland, with loan spells at Charlton Athletic and now Sheffield United helping him get back to playing regular football. This season the Blades are gunning for return to the Premier League and Halford has been a key player in their progress, notching six goals to date, operating as a winger at Bramall Lane.

The 24-year-old has cost clubs £5million in transfer fees so far, and Ransacker’s Chris Galea caught up with him to talk about which boots have helped him guide missiles into the back of the net from distance.

Q. What boots do you wear at the moment?
A. I’m wearing Lotto boots this season.

Q. Have you always worn them?
A. No, I’ve just started wearing them this season, having been an Adidas Predator guy before.

Q. Why did you change?
A. I tested some Lottos out whilst at Charlton Athletic last season and they were really comfortable and I’ve grown to like them. For me, personally, they are the most comfortable boots I have ever worn.

Q. Is there much difference between boots?
A. Yes, there is. Everyone has their preferred style and brand. Some players take a couple of weeks to get their boots worn in, so that the cleat can adjust to their feet. The Lottos seem to fit me well straight out of the box really and they have a really snug fit.

Q. There was a time when coloured football boots were non-existent, but they seem to have secured their place in the game now, what is your view on them [Halford wears white boots at the moment]?
A. I don’t really know why they have come into fruition so much, but I feel it is mainly for players to stand out really, with an array of colours to choose from nowadays. They allow you to be unique and it gives everyone a chance to make their own fashion statement and catch the eye. It can either work for or against you and a lot of players are coming out with these new versions of coloured boots.

Q. One of those versions was brought to the footballing world’s attention by Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner when he opted to wear pink boots. Would you wear them?
A. Not a chance! I’m sticking to white boots. I’ve never really worn black boots, so white is my traditional colour as such and they suit me down to the ground.
