Nike T90 Laser III vs Nike T90 Laser II

December 15th, 2009 by James Fielden | Comment

To the naked eye not great, wacky colourway, little cohesion and every chance they will look odd with any team’s kit. I don’t know many teams who have the colour scheme of a Christmas tree!?

But let’s take this more seriously then the overall look of the boot. The T90 series has been hugely successful and as it enters its tenth anniversary year the boots can only get better as scientific developments become more and more advanced. Believe it or not this is the seventh version of the T90 following: Air Zoom Total 90, Air Zoom Total 90 II, Air Zoom Total 90 III, Total 90 Supremacy, Total 90 Laser and most recently the Total 90 Laser II.

The Nike Total 90 Laser III football boots were first showcased last weekend with Liverpool’s Fernando Torres and Spurs’ Robbie Keane both donning the boots for the first time. However, both endured a frustrating time on the pitch with their respective teams suffering narrow defeats.

So I thought I would compare the Nike Total 90 Laser III football boots with their highly successful predecessor the, Nike Total 90 Laser II football boots, to see if they are worthy of the hype and the extra wedge.

Yes you can still tell that the Nike Total 90 Laser III football boots have the same mother, but I’m not so sure about their father. The addition of an external heal counter is obvious and welcomed. It will provide greater protection and reinforcement to the achilles.

The Nike Total 90 Laser III football boots are also better shaped to the contours of your feet and feel slightly narrower. This should aid both touch and control of the ball. Overall I think the small changes to profile will make a positive change to the performance of the boot.

This is where the biggest and most exciting changes have been made, because aside from the Teijin synthetic leather upper, very little remains. The biggest most recognisable change is the shot shield. It has had a complete redesign which actually makes you question the powers of the original.

Nike seem to have decided that instead of stricking the ball with the upper part of your foot that you acually kick the ball with your instep. Hence they have moved all the technology to the instep and left a clean striking surface by replacing the v-twin lacing system with a ‘fashionable’ asymmetrical Lacing System.

Five flexible pods have been added to; “create a uniform contact that creates a smoother surface for even pressure distribution when the ball interacts with the foot”. Now, I’m not a physician but surely by distributing the pressure you are actually decreasing the force?

Secondly you will notice that a series of small fins have been added, they remind me a bit of the adidas Predator Pig. However, unlike the pods, the physics stack up with this addition; more fins = more friction & more spin

The successful Lightweight TPU plate that provided such good traction, stability and comfort in the Laser II’s is still present. In fact if you actually look at the stud configuration it is exactly the same, I suppose if it isn’t broken don’t fix it!

Online Access!
The boots also come with a code to access ‘Nike Football+’. Although it’s not the first outing for this software due to its release with the CTR360 Maestri, it’s a great aid in the form of a digital coaching programme. Via nikefootball.com using a special user code unique to each pair of boots you (supposedly) can improve your skills with insights and training drills. All provided with the help of Juventus’ coaching team. Internet translators at the ready!

My thoughts: personally, I can’t stand the green colorway but the white and black boots look the business. I’m impressed with the technology and extremely curious to see how the new instep performs and whether or not you can get a good purchase on the ball. I hope to be putting the boots through their paces over Christmas. I’ve noticed that SportsDirect are already retailing the Nike Total 90 Laser III football boots for under £95.00 which is only £15.00 more than the Nike Total 90 Laser II shown above, and given that its Christmas I think they are probably worth stretching the budget that bit extra! Are they going to make you play better then your last pair of T90s did – probably not, but I’ll let you know in a few weeks.

What do you think about the Nike Total 90 Laser III football boots? Let us know below.
