Imagine the guffawing when Michael Carrick entered the fray after 92 minutes of yesterday’s big Manchester derby. We’d billed this one as the ultimate midfield showdown between the United man’s Puma King XL and City man Stephen Ireland’s Nike Mercurial Vapor Superfly.
The stage was set, the setting was perfect, and the result was an absorbing red versus blue showdown. Problem was, Carrick was stuck on the bench for most of it as United went on the offensive with that misery Berbatov up front.
Of course, when Carrick did arrive two minutes into injury-time, the common assumption was that the game would be over within a matter of seconds allowing City to escape with a decent point. But this is Old Trafford…
Despite United grabbing a clock-watching winner with the England man on the pitch, the clash of the cleats didn’t really take off in this one so we have little choice but to declare the weekend’s battle null and void.
