Boot Room Banter: Blades man Danny Webber

May 6th, 2009 by James Evans | Comment

Fleet-footed striker Danny Webber learned his silky skills at Manchester United, but only managed a handful of appearances for the Premier League giants before joining Watford. He helped the Hornets to an FA Cup semi-final in 2002/03 - where they lost to Premier League Southampton - and notched 21 goals for the club before joining Sheffield United for £500,000.

Neil Warnock has bagged another bargain in Webber as he scored ten goals during his first full season at Bramall Lane to help the Blades clinch promotion to the top tier of English football. Injuries disrupted his time in the Premiership as the Blades were relegated on the final day of the season, but he did manage to score vital goals in the 1-0 victories at Newcastle and former club Watford.

Injuries have continued to besiege his career over the last few seasons, but the Blades are on the verge of a potential Premier League return and Webber will hope to put those woes behind him and help the Yorkshire outfit return to the promised land.

Ransacker’s Chris Galea spoke to Danny about his new boots and why they are going to be the next big thing in the football boot industry.

Q. What boots do you wear?
A. I’m wearing some new boots called Concave, which have just come out and they are supposed to help players hit the sweet spot more often when striking the ball, so I thought I’d give them a shot. I’ve found them very comfortable, so I reckon I’ll be sticking with them for a while. You can take a look at them at www.concave.com and there are quite a few players who are wearing them at the moment, but I’m really enjoying them.

How long have you tried them for?
I’ve been wearing them out for the last couple of months and the new 09 boot has come out. As soon as I put my foot into it it was perfect for me, so I’m happy to continue with them. I used to wear Nike before that, but I’m really pleased with the Concave’s.

Q. Is there a big difference between the two?
A. The Concave’s are just really comfy and they fit a bit like the Adidas Predators, which I used to wear too, so it suits me really well.

Q. As a tricky striker do you tend to have different boot preferences to say a tough-tacking defender like team-mate Chris Morgan?
A. I think there is a definitely a difference to which boots suit those different kinds of player. Generally the wingers and strikers go for the flashier boots, which make them stand out a little more, whereas defenders like Morgs tend to prefer the basic models which do the job. Morgs wears his Umbro studs even if he is on concrete, whereas I prefer a moulded or a blade, so there is a contrast in that respect.

Q. You started out as a trainee at Manchester United, and must have cleaned the boots of some good players during your time there?
A. Yeah, I used to clean Andy Cole’s boots and back then he was one of my idols who was scoring for fun, so he was a very good professional to learn from.

Q. Do you feel those types of jobs helped the trainees keep their feet on the ground because youngsters can tend to get carried away a little can’t they?
A. I think without a doubt those jobs helped youngsters stay grounded and I don’t know why they got rid of the boot boys because I thought it was great idea to keep their feet on the ground and learn their trade. It’s a shame that they have been scrapped really because it stood players like myself in good stead for the future.
