We’ve used our contacts to bring you the lowdown on what is set to be the biggest and boldest boot release of the summer: the adidas F50 adiZero.

The adidas F50 adiZero will be released on May 24, sandwiched slyly between the Champions League final (which will have been the day before in Madrid), and some tournament in South Africa that’s due to kick-off about a fortnight later. Should Barcelona overturn their first leg deficit against Inter Milan, what price Lionel Messi debuting the boot the previous night?!

Set to be the world’s lightest football boot the adidas F50 adiZero will weigh in at a mere 165gm and have an RRP of £125 - making the Nike Mercurial Vapor VI look rather ‘Neil Ruddock’d’ – i.e. overweight and overpriced!

To create the world’s lightest football boots, adidas have welded together two new advanced technologies that manage to reduce the weight whilst maintaining stability. These are namely; Sprint Skin and Sprint Frame.

Sprint Skin

As used on the adidas F50i, Sprint Skin technology uses a revolutionary single layer synthetic for incredible ball-feeling and reduced weight.

Sprint Frame

Sprint Frame technology is employed on the outsole of the adidas F50 adiZero, its unique geometry helps maintain stability and reduce weight.

According to senior product manager, Aubrey Dolan from addidas;

The adidas F50 adiZero is all about speed. It needs to be, because modern football has become so much quicker, even in the last five years. So when designing the new boots we were looking to make a big difference for players. When we consulted players like Messi, Villa, Adebayor, Podolski, Benzema, Nasri and Defoe, they consistently told us they wanted boots that would help them become faster. Players wanted to be first to the ball, so we decided that the best way forward was to make a lightweight product which could be used at the highest level.

“There were other major considerations like the need for support and protection, but we were always driven primarily by the need to be faster.

“We started development in 2008 and looked into areas like competitive sprinting for inspiration. Looking at performance sprinters helped us come up with some special features to aid straight-line speed. However there’s a big difference between an athlete running 100 metres in 9.67 seconds and a footballer running over 13 kilometres in different directions over 90 minutes. We also needed to factor acceleration, deceleration and rapid turns into our prototype.

“The feedback from the prototype of the adidas F50 adiZero was amazing. The first version was all black, with no markings. Everyone wanted to touch and feel the boot and players were saying,“Wow!” when they felt how light the boots were. Then we were certain we were heading in the right direction.”

Key Components

The Upper

As mentioned above, the adidas adidas F50 adiZero Upper is made of Sprint Skin technology for ultimate ball control and dramatically reduced weight. The adidas F50 adiZero also posseses internal TPU support bands that increase stability and support, reinforce the single-layer upper material, and provide important energy savings.

The Outsole

The outsole of the adidas F50 adiZero is constructed around an advanced sprint frame for an extremely lightweight design that also offers improved stability through geometry. adidas TRAXION technology provides as unique stud shape that offers maximum acceleration.

The TPU bottom frame of the adidas F50 adiZero creates an incredibly stable and reinforced construction while offering protection against abrasion. The TPU bottom frame also provides better bonding between the outsole and the upper, preventing separation and increasing durability.

The Inlay

As you will have guessed this is ultra light! And the adidas F50 adiZero also comes with an extra pair of highly breathable comfort sockliners.
